PKU

Kevin and Mara Alexander are an interesting couple! Mara has Celiac and Kevin has PKU. He was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (PKU) when he was 9 days old.  PKU is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder that is characterized by the inability of the body to utilize the essential amino acid, phenylalanine (Phe). Amino acids, usually obtained from the food we eat, are the building blocks for body proteins. So, Kevin must eat a VERY low-protein (AKA low-“phe”) diet.
