The Juiceman Jr and His Marvelous Gluten-free Wake Up Juice
by Mara Alexander
When I was younger, my Mom had this juicer..one of those old creamy white-colored Juiceman Jr’s; the kind that sounds like a chainsaw when you turn it on. It was leftover from the early 90’s. Mom wrote our last name on the bottom of it in big letters with a sharpie. When she moved houses a few years ago, she gave me the juicer. Maybe it was because she knows I’m just as sentimental as she is and she knew we had some great memories with that juicer. Or maybe it’s because she wanted me to take up juicing; anyway, I used it a couple times off and on over the years but not consistently. That good ‘ol Juiceman Jr still had the carrot stains all over it and our last name was still just as bold in big letters on the bottom on it. After Mom gave it to me, it sat in my husband and I’s kitchen cabinet for several years.
However, in the past few months I decided to pull it out of the cabinet and use it. In fact, since it has been out on on my cabinet, I have been using it every day… sometimes two or three times a day. I love that thing. It still sounds like a chainsaw when you turn it on, and I’m sure that I become our neighborhood’s early morning wake-up call when I use it, but it still runs like a charm and it still makes great juice. I gave up coffee years ago, so for me the afternoons can be a bit rough not being able to have a “pick me up” that doesn’t involved caffeine. Rediscovering juicing has been a lifesaver. Now in the mornings and afternoons, I look forward to having a refreshing juice drink. At first, I started off by juicing carrots and adding maybe one or two ingredients, but I’ve been more bold recently in adding different fruits and veggies into the mix. The other day I was really struggling to stay awake in the afternoon, especially with the time change, and I discovered that throwing in a little bit of pineapple, lemon and line can really help give the juice a kick. I really hope you enjoy the following recipe that I came up with to help wake me up!
Recipe for gluten-free afternoon wake me up juice
One fourth of a pineapple
One cup of spinach
One stalk of celery
One half of a cucumber
One fourth of a lemons pulp
One fourth of the lines pulp
Put ingredients and juicer. Pour in a glass. Enjoy a kick!
